Warm and Cold Reboots of the Raspberry Pi

Why does the Raspberry Pi, regardless of the model, have neither a power switch nor a restart button? Probably to cut costs. Without a power switch, we start and stop the Raspberry Pi by plugging or unpluggint a power supply to its micro USB connector. This should be avoided for at least two reasons. The small connector is not mechanically robust. Then, there is a risk of corrupting the file system on the Raspberry Pi SD card when the operating system is not shut down correctly. It may even become impossible to boot the system.

Power Supply toc

I use power supplies like the one shown below on the left side. It is equipped with a switch and it is then possible to connect the cable to the Raspberry Pi more or less permanently to thereby reduce mechanical wear on the micro-USB connector. If you already have power supplies that have a USB type A socket then you can get a USB cable with a switch as shown in the center below. Finally if the cable is permanently attached to the power supply then you can get a short micro USB extension cable with a switch as shown on the right below. These cables are not very expensive and could be a good solution if you already have a power supply that works well. This is not a recommendation, I do not have these types of extension cables.

The Raspberry Pi model 4 comes with a USB type C connector. These connectors have a better reputation than micro USB connectors. That said, I cannot say that there is no need for a switch. Note however that the power supply I use is now available with a type C connector and the switch remains present.

It would be nice to have an oscilloscope to see if the voltage reaches operating levels cleanly when the power switch is turned on, but I don't have one. I had to settle for a logic analyzer, a clone of a Saleae obtained from China for a few dollars. Three channels were sampled:

RUN shows aconsiderable amount of noise for a period of just over 3 milliseconds. Likewise, the voltage on the 3.3 volt rail does not cleanly reach this level.

Only the 5-volt bus behaves in an exemplary manner. This is very surprising since the 5 volt current from the power supply must be cut several times when the switch is activated because of the mechanical bounce of its contacts. Since 3.3 volts is derived from 5 volts using a PAM2306 type voltage regulator, I thought there would be less noise on this bus. My expectations were completely wrong. As for the delay before RUN reached 3.3 volts, the Model 3 B schematic shows that it is intentional as part of a complex sequencing of system voltages during the start process. We can also see that there is an “ideal diode” circuit between the power supply and the 5-volt bus. Is this the reason for the clean jump of that rail when the Pi is started? I do not have the expertise to pursue this discussion further. Here are some reading for the curious.

When power is cut, something similar can be observed.

The power down sequence stretches over 72 milliseconds which is much longer than at startup. And here it is 3.3 volt rail that stops first and it does so cleanly.

The guinea pig for my experiments described below is a Raspberry Pi 3 model B with four cores (ARM Cortex-A53 at 1.2 GHZ - Broadcom BCM2837) and 1 GB of RAM.

According to the site Checking Your Raspberry Pi Revision Number & Board Version by Matt, the device was manufactured by Sony in the United Kingdom.

The installed operating system is Rasbian Buster Lite (Linux kernel 4.19) version 2019-09-26 to which some modifications have been made. The default user is woopi and the hostname is goldserver. For more details, see a post titled Installation and Configuration of Raspbian Buster Lite. As always, an update was carried out just before embarking on the experiment.

Only one modification was made to the configuration file /boot/config.txt which is the equivalent of the BIOS as stated in the Raspberry Pi documentation.

The addition is at the very end of the file. The amount of RAM dedicated to the video processor is reduced to a minimum, 16 MB, because the Raspberry Pi is used as a server and is never connected to a monitor.

Are there any differences between these commands? I thought I had read that one or two were actually aliases. By browsing a bit, it became clear that they all links to the systemctl utility, at least for Linux distributions that use systemd such as Red Hat, Arch, and Debian (and therefore Raspbian).

So the systemctl documentaqtion has to be read to understand what happens when one of these commands is given.

man systemctl ... System Commands halt Shut down and halt the system. This is mostly equivalent to systemctl start halt.target --job-mode=replace-irreversibly --no-block, but also prints a wall message to all users. This command is asynchronous; it will return after the halt operation is enqueued, without waiting for it to complete. Note that this operation will simply halt the OS kernel after shutting down, leaving the hardware powered on. Use systemctl poweroff for powering off the system (see below). If combined with --force, shutdown of all running services is skipped, however all processes are killed and all file systems are unmounted or mounted read-only, immediately followed by the system halt. If --force is specified twice, the operation is immediately executed without terminating any processes or unmounting any file systems. This may result in data loss. Note that when --force is specified twice the halt operation is executed by systemctl itself, and the system manager is not contacted. This means the command should succeed even when the system manager has crashed. poweroff Shut down and power-off the system. This is mostly equivalent to systemctl start poweroff.target --job-mode=replace-irreversibly --no-block, but also prints a wall message to all users. This command is asynchronous; it will return after the power-off operation is enqueued, without waiting for it to complete. If combined with --force, shutdown of all running services is skipped, however all processes are killed and all file systems are unmounted or mounted read-only, immediately followed by the powering off. This means the command should succeed even when the system manager has crashed. reboot [arg] Shut down and reboot the system. This command is asynchronous; it will return after the reboot operation is enqueued, without waiting for it to complete. If combined with --force, shutdown of all running services is skipped, however all processes are killed and all file systems are unmounted or mounted read-only, immediately followed by the reboot. If --force is specified twice, the operation is immediately executed without terminating any processes or unmounting any file systems. This may result in data loss. Note that when --force is specified twice the reboot operation is executed by systemctl itself, and the system manager is not contacted. This means the command should succeed even when the system manager has crashed. If the optional argument arg is given, it will be passed as the optional argument to the reboot(2) system call. The value is architecture and firmware specific. As an example, "recovery" might be used to trigger system recovery, and "fota" might be used to trigger a “firmware over the air” update. ...

If I understand these paragraphs correctly, the first task accomplished by halt, poweroff, reboot and eventually shutdown is to stop all services and ongoing process. In addition, the file systems buffers in RAM are saved in non-volatile memory (which would be a hard drive of a desktop computer or an SD card of a Raspberry Pi) before unmounting the file system. What happens next depends on the order.

halt : Nothing more happens after the orderly shutdown. Power is not completely shut off, even after a poweroff command; the difference is about the amount of current consumed.
shutdown :
poweroff : After the orderly shutdown, power is nominally cut.
reboot : After the orderly shutdown, the operating system is restarted.

Information gleaned from the web is not very clear about what happens to the power provided to connected peripherals. It seems that the USB ports and the 3.3 and 5 volt rails of the GPIO connector could remain powered following the poweroff. Also it is likely that there are differences between different Raspberry Pi models in this respect.

If the --force (or -f) option is added to any of the commands, then the system services are not stopped, but the processes are closed properly including dismounting the file systems. If the --force --force (or -f -f the duplicate is necessary) option is used, then neither services nor processes are stopped properly, so that there is then a risk of data loss. There can be unfortunate consequences, as a file system could be damaged to such an extent that it might be impossible to restart. Consequently, this option should only be used in cases of orce majeure; when the system is so broken that it is impossible to restart or otherwise shut it down.

The following provides details about the system shutdown phase. It can all be skipped, by going immediately to the next section without losing the thread of the discussion.

To see what the system does when it shuts down, log messages must be kept from one boot to the next. In that case, the log of each session will be kept in the file /var/log/journal. Note that it is probably not desirable to systematically keep the journal in this way. The capacity of an SD card is relatively limited.

Reboot and then examine the log of the penultimate start. The messages with the blue background were sent to the journal after the reboot command was given. They show the sequence of operations as the system is shutdown properly. It's a bit like what happens when the system boots as seen on the black background, but the order of the operations is reversed.

Cold Reboot toc

While there is no reset button on the Raspberry Pi 3 B (or any other Raspberrry Pi), and no header with that name, there is a couple of through holes named RUN to can be soldered a normally open push button. However, I recommend soldering a 0.1 inch (2.54mm) 2 pin header and connecting the button to it with Dupont wires, as was the case with reset buttons on desktop computers in the past.

The pin on the right, which is the one closest to the USB port, is connected to ground. The pin on the left, closes to the RUN label is connected directly to the RUN pin of the BCM2837 system on a chip (SOC). According to the partial schematic, this same input is pulled towards 3.3 volts (logic value 1) using a voltage divider connected to the 5 volt rail. As long as the SOC RUN input pin has a logical value of 1, the system can operate. If, exceptionally, the logic value drops to 0, then the chip stops working.

If the normally open push button connected to the two RUN connector pins is momentarily pressed, the system is immediately stopped as soon as contact is made. When the button is released, the system reboots. We therefore have the equivalent of a reset button, but activating it suspends the operation of the system without properly closing the services and processes. In fact, it is the equivalent of the sudo reboot --force --force command which is not the correct way to reboot the system. What we get is the equivalent of cutting and restoring power to the Raspberry Pi.

The SOC RUN input has another function. If the system on a chip is disabled after a command such as halt or shutoff, then normal operation can be resumed by activating the push button. Nothing changes when the RUN input is grounded since the system was already stopped, but when the button is released, the signal to the SOC RUN input returns to logic value 1 and it the SOC restarts.

Surprisingly, another SOC pin, GPIO3, can do the same thing: restart the system whose operation has been suspended with a halt, shudtdown type command. We can therefore connect a normally open push button between this input (pin 5 of the GPIO connector) and earth. The adjacent pin 6 on the header is a practical choice. Note that GPIO3 retains this capacity even if it is used as the data signal (SDA) of the I2C bus when the latter is enabled.

The gio-shutdown Module toc

The designers of Raspbian have provided a mechanism to manually shut down the operating system in an orderly fashion by creating a kernel module for this purpose.

When this is 0 (active high), this is reversed. The default is 1 (active low). gpio_pull Desired pull-up/down state (off, down, up) Default is "up". Note that the default pin (GPIO3) has an external pullup. debounce Specify the debounce interval in milliseconds (default 100)

The installation of the module is simple as is the addition of a push button. By default, there is an internal pull-up resistor and the module has a reasonable switch debounce time default value. In addition, the latest version of Raspbian Buster contains systemd version 241, which is recent enough so that there is no need to add a udev rule. To verify that this works correctly, I stopped the system correctly with halt, turned the power off and set up the three push buttons as shown below.

There is nothing to add regarding the connection RUN and the push button could be removed, but it does serve as a fallback mecansim. The button connected to the GPIO17 pin will be used to stop the system while the one connected to GPIO3 will restart the system when it is suspended as explained at the end of the previous section.

After restarting the system, I added the module (overlay) to the device tree temporarily after checking that it gpio-shutdown was not already installed confirming that it was not contained in /boot/config.txt and that it had not been installed manually before.

Now we can proceed with the test by temporarily pressing the push button connected to GPIO17. The system should stop. From the start we will see a lot of activity on the green LED of the Raspberry Pi. Then the latter will go out definitively and only the red LED remains on while the operating system is suspended. You can restart the system by pressing the push button connected to GPIO3, by pressing the push button connected to RUN or by cutting and then restoring power to the Raspberry Pi. If we examine the log of the penultimate boot, we can see that the system was stopped correctly as if the sudo shutdown now command had been given.

Help about gpio-shutdown suggests using GPIO3 to shutdown and restart the system. It is certainly possible, but GPIO3 is part of the hardware I2C bus and I have read in several places that the gpio-shutdown module will not work if the hardware I2C bus is enabled. To verify, I stopped the Raspberry Pi and connected an I2C hardware clock which uses the GPI02 and GPIO3 in addition to the push button connected to GPIO3. Then I enabled I2C bus and the hardware clock and after verifying that the latter worked, I installed the gpio-shutdown module. The clock continued to work.

The clock can be read, but nothing happens when the shutdown push button is pressed. I eliminated the clock and I2C modules but left the gpio-shutdown module.

Without the hardware I2C controller in place, it became possible to shutdown the system correctly by pressing on the push button.

Other Raspberry Pi Models toc

Above, we were talking about restarting a Raspberry Pi model 3 B running Raspbian Buster. Given the very laudable concern of the Raspberry Foundation to adapt each new Raspbian version so that it can run on all models of the Raspberry Pi, the above should work, regardless of the model.

The only complication is the connection to the system on a chip RUN input pin. As far as I know this connection is available on each model of the Raspberry Pi with the exception of the first version put on sale in 2011. This was quickly replaced in December of the same year. These two initial versions of the Raspberry Pi are easily distinguished: by the color of the 3.5 mm connector (first black, then blue), by the date of the copyright (2011 for the first version and 2011.12 for the second) and by the absence of mounting holes on the first version.

The SOC RUN input signal is connected to the through hole labelled RUN(or P6, or P2 for older models). If the neighboring through hole has no label then it is connected to ground. The exceptions are the Model 3 A+ and 3 B+ where the adjacent hole is labeled PEN. For these two models, use a I/O header pin connected to ground. But you should not take my word for it, I only have three different Raspberry Pi Models. Always use a ohm-meter to trace the connections of the through holes.

There is no doubt that it is useful to add a reset button to the Raspberry Pi. This addition imposes a seemingly difficult choice: should GPIO3 be used to have a single reset button or for communicationg with I2C devices including a hardware clock which is essential if the Raspberry Pi is the host of a home automation system for example.

Luckily there are other possibilities. If the I2C devices allow it, one can use a software I2C bus using different GPIO poins. This is a less efficient implementation of the I2C protocol involving "bit banging". This approach works with hardware clocks based on the DS3231 chip and Flash memory (Atmel EEPROM 24C32); see I2C clock and EEPROM memory module for Raspberry Pi.

If you want to reserve the GPIO2 and GPIO3 for the hardware I2C bus, then use another GPIO pin with the gpio-shutdown module as described in the previous section. If you don't want a second push button connected to RUN to restart the Raspberry Pi, the power switch can be used since the operating system has been shut down correctly.

Another possibility is to create your own driver to detect the temporary closing of a push button connected to a GPIO pin. Among the many examples on the Web, I have chosen two to implement this approach (see Reboot and Shutdown Switch). A single button is enough: if the button is pressed for more than 3 seconds, the system is correctly shutdown while it is rebooted if the button is pressed for less time.

It's up to everyone to choose what suits them best. Since I have a hardware watchdog which as a last resort will restart a hung Raspberry Pi by activating the SOC RUN signal, I intend to use the gpio-shutdown module connected to a general input-output pin such as GPIO17 as a complement.
